Succession Planning

One of the most challenging aspects of owning a business is knowing how to sell it when the time is right. The Succession Planning Program is designed to provide business owners with comprehensive guidance to develop a robust succession plan for their business.

Are you getting ready to retire? Do you think that it is important to plan for retirement well in advance?  Are you trying to sell or transition your business to someone else?

If the answer to any of these questions is "yes".  Then you may be a good candidate to participate in Tourism Saskatchewan's Succession Planning Program.

Tourism businesses need succession plans, yet according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, less than 9% of Canadian businesses have a formal succession plan.

Many tourism businesses in Saskatchewan, particularly small and family-owned, face challenges in transitioning leadership, potentially risking business closures or loss of community assets. Succession planning ensures that these businesses remain operational, contributing to sustaining the province’s tourism industry and economy.

Tourism Saskatchewan is launching a formal succession planning pilot for business owners looking for guided one-on-one help to set up their written plans for transition and includes one-year free access to the SuccessionMatching marketplace for the business owners who complete their Formal Succession Plan. This platform is designed to match compatible sellers and buyers through a secure and discreet site to aid the transaction.

The Succession Planning program has been designed to assist tourism industry operators in understanding the essential steps to ensure your business is well-prepared for a successful sale or transfer. Whether you're ready to sell soon or need to get a plan in place, this program will provide actionable strategies to enhance your business readiness, streamline the transition process, and avoid common pitfalls that can prevent a successful deal.

Program Requirements

There are a limited number of spots available for the initial program; to measure the impact of succession planning on our industry, we are looking for a cross section of businesses to take part.

The program is free to participants and is open March 2025.  It consists of professional coaching for 20 weeks through a minimum of 8 virtual meetings.  You will be required to have access to a computer that is connected to the internet, has video capabilities, and a microphone.

To submit an expression of interest in participating in the program, please complete this short questionnaire.
